Book Review: Tris&Izzie by Mette Ivie Harrison

Tris & IzzieTris & Izzie by Mette Ivie Harrison
Expected publication: October 11th 2011 by EgmontUSA

My rating: 2 of 5 stars

A modern retelling of the German fairytale "Tristan and Isolde", Tris and Izzie is about a young witch named Izzie who is dating Mark King, the captain of the basketball team and thinks her life is going swimmingly well. Until -- she makes a love potion for her best friend Brangane and then ends up taking it herself accidentally, and falling in love with Tristan, the new guy at school.

Let me first just say how disappointed I am these past few days, I seem to be reading more awful books lately... well anyway, here goes...
I had a love at first sight with the book’s cover, what with all it’s gorgeous color, autumn environment, it was just so pretty, plus the title captioned and modernized Tristan&Isolde just with the perfect touch. I can almost taste the beautiful potential it has. However, I just had to read what’s inside it. Boy, was I disappointed! What I thought to be one of the epic love story in history retold in a not-at-all epic novel. I read many review saying negative things about Tris&Izzie but I had to give it a try thinking “since I haven’t read the original manuscript, I won’t compare and expect too much. Surely it won’t be all bad!”, also this will be a chance for me to enjoy the story in a modern retelling. Twenty-five percent in, I already didn’t like the way it was written, but still I went on thinking it will get better, but not surprisingly it didn’t! I’m sorry but this is just one of the silliest, corniest, most predictable and cliched story I’ve ever read. It has lots of loopholes and problems I can’t even point my finger on. I hate how trying hard it was to be “fast-paced” without having any breaks at all. Everything happened in one week. Izzie fell in love with Tristan only in one day. ONE DAY! So much action has happened in one day, and I can actually believe those, but love at first sight? Are you freaking kidding me? Not just the love which actually means “I just like like you”, but the “I love you forever” thing, which is ridiculously funny. Moreover, the break-up, make-ups that took place didn’t quite entertained me, it burdened me! Is that how quickly you realize you turned out to be not with the right person? The characters’ personas were so twisted. Izzie was so bitchy most of the time that I hated her. I hated how she can’t just control her feelings and keep it inside a box. I hated how Tristan was so fake. I know I know he’s being true to himself but I can’t help it but see him as fake. Branna. gosh I don’t know how traitor friends like her exist. I can’t just accept how fast Izzie forgave her and how “open” she was to giving Mark (her boyfriend) to her. URGH. Every freaking time I remember it, I can taste how cliche and how fiction it is. And then, there was the main story. I thought this was a love story, but it turned out to be a paranormal fantasy novel, which is soo not what the summary was trying to portray. Sigh, sigh, sigh. I’m so broken by this book. Anyway, despite all my negative comments, I have to say in some parts of the book, I like how the story went. But mostly, I didn’t like it.

Movie Review: ABDUCTION

FIVE out of FIVE!

Because I put this on “movies to watch out for”, I definitely need to make a review, hahaha. HOnestly, I was very sad I’ve watched the movie days after it’s premiere, but heck! all the waiting is so worth it.

“Trust is never given, it has to be earned..”
Abduction is an American action thriller film, directed by John Singleton, starring Taylor LautnerLily CollinsSigourney WeaverMaria BelloJason IsaacsMichael Nyqvist and Alfred Molina. The film is about a teenager who finds out that his parents are not really his when he sees his baby picture on a missing persons website. Abduction was released on September 23.

Many favored the movie but many also said it had a lot of wrongs in it, but for me it was worth every penny. Not just because I’m biased being Taylor’s fan, but it was a great big leap from his Twilight acts. The movie has fun, drama, love story and action packed into one. The story itself was great, it kept me (literally!) on the edge of my seat, squealing here and there. The plot, climax, etc had just the right taste and timing. Even the chemistry between Taylor and Lily Collins was uber perfect! Sigh. I still can’t over the movie! Okay, so lastly this movie is mostly great for teenager fans. :)

Good Job! :)

My rating:  didn't like it didn't like it didn't like it didn't like it it was ok

Like most girls at Rosemound High School, seventeen-year-old Lily Crane is acutely aware of Ryder Kingscott. Hands down the cutest guy in school, Ryder is cool, mysterious, and utterly untouchable…especially for Lily. For when she touches someone, Lily instantly learns all about their lives. And while such a skill might seem nifty, in truth it is wrecking Lily’s life.
So she is shocked when Ryder asks her out — and even more shocked to discover he has a rival. Lucian Bell is the gorgeous new kid who can’t take his eyes off of Lily. Being pursued by two hotties should make a girl happy, but Lily is skeptical. The boys act as if they’ve met before, hating each other with a passion that could only be rooted in a dark, dangerous past. A past full of terrible secrets. The kind of secrets that could get a girl killed.

My Thoughts:
I started reading this book from another city. I read it in the car...in the restaurant..in the hotel...in the airplane (with the noisiest airplane mates I’ve ever experienced, I swear it was like a market up there! anyway)..and finished it at home. It was quite a journey.
Judging from the book’s cute cover with a pink background and girlie cartoon, you wouldn’t assume it was a serious story.. BUT it was. I thought it was a light, romantic, chick lit read but get this, I was stunned to learn it was PNR, and a very serious one at that.
The story. Let me tell you, it brought me all kinds of emotions and feelings: giddiness ( I say this and not “happy” because I was literally giggling ALL the time), embarrassment (the beginning part of the story) , love (well, obviously), hate (for some characters), confusion, hope, failure, sadness, heartaches (too much of it), and happiness. I was literally up and down on the roller coaster ride of feelings and such. I liked the prose of the book. The author used lots of metaphors and similes and explanations of phenomenons and happenings in almost every scene each chapter. Sometimes I thought there were more explanations and metaphors than the story telling itself, so it got boring. Also, most of the time the events tended to skip from one to another which confused me a lot and made me reread what I just read. Sometimes, it was the sentences were hard to understand..that’s just me. Anyway!
At the beginning, it was very much exciting, started with a clean slate, a new story to read...the main lead Lily was cute and charming and shy, the partner, Ryder, was HOT and nice., too much to handle! I liked how they knew each other one year before anything happened to them (in short, i loved how Ryder waited). But then the start of all my frustrations began: there’s VERY complicated and hidden past between Lily and Ryder, which obviously we shouldn’t know yet because it’s still the beginning, and it must remain a MYSTERY. I hated the fact that Lily didn’t pester Ryder about it everyday, they just had one argument, I mean conversation on it, then “CASED CLOSED”. that’s it! that’s it? gosh!.. Everything went repetitive after a while (boring!) Then come a new guy, Lucian who added spice to the boiling stew! He was someone you can’t just ignore and put on the sidelines, NO, he just had to be part of the story. But once he was settled in, all the angry vibrations hanging in the air remain loose and basically nothing exciting happened. Then come in a new chapter where thankfully the climax of the story comes in...answers are slowly answered, more girl power showed, a bit of a guy fight (I admit I liked), then the history of everything, the sadness and unsolvable problem revealed..too much remorse and depression. BUT I have to say this, there’s a BIG BIG TWIST in the story. One that’s in the back of your head all the time but you chose to ignore, then when the revelation came, you say “ I KNEW that all along, you know”. So okay, that’s what I said. It was one BIG IRONY, and I love it! I miss these kinds of twists. The one you expected and know will happen but just kept your mouth shut, afraid you’re mistaken because it’s just too obvious..but you were right all along. anyway, bitterness aside I will continue. The ending was very satisfying, there was no other way but that ending. It was sad but happy. A bit of lability there, but it’s true. Epic Success! :)
Overall, the metaphors did a lot of depth to the book. The story was kinda unique but a lot of fun. :)

Edie and Dylan are finally a real couple, and to celebrate they’re off on an amazing road trip across America. But nine weeks on the road in a foreign country is a long time—and a real test of their feelings for each other. Will it bring them even closer together, or break them apart forever?
The ending was not satisfying at all! Personally, it was not a good ending because so much can still happen especially that Edie is still starting her university studies. I know, I know, that it was mentioned that they’ll remain together no matter what happens..they’ll still fight a lot and problems will always be there, but they’re more mature everyday, and they love each other so nothing to worry about...BUT STILL!
Anyway, I love this book more than the other two. I love how it started of with how normal everything is, then there are little fights here and there. Poppy, Edie’s current BFF is such a pain in the ass here. She’s a very complicated human specie. I love Tracy by the way, she’s the only light in the darkness some part of this book brought upon, lol. She’s so sweet and innocent, I love it. I like Edie here, all the time. I get her more, and the decisions she made were really very mature. Way to go Edie! Plus, Dylan, I still hated him most of the time. No biases my friends, but it was not his moodiness, but only his attitude of the lack of trust to Edie. Yes, he loves her very much, but at one time he did something (no he did not cheat), or he did not do something (by omission) which goes to show how NOT trustful he is. Anyway, I felt that that needed to happen for them to resolve their issues in the future that they talk about things earlier and not delay solving problems. Also, the roadtrip was really a NEED in the story. Without it, there was no other way the story’s main story could’ve been told. Edie and Dylan’s love story was in fact, that ROAD Trip... Overall, I really really love this series! A great read especially in times of great sadness. Cheers!

Book Review: Diary of a Crush 2: Kiss and Make-up by Sarra Manning

Kiss and Make Up (Diary of a Crush, #2)Kiss and Make Up by Sarra Manning

My rating: 5 of 5 stars

Paperback272 pages
Published June 8th 2006 by Puffin (first published July 15th 2004)

It’s sizzling summertime, and Edie can’t wait for the partying to start. Trying to forget about the dastardly Dylan, Edie’s taking her new squeeze Carter to the Glastonbury music festival to have some fun. But guess who’s there already, looking totally gorgeous? That’s right . .

My Thoughts:
It just got better. I love this more than the first one. I love how mature Edie got, how changed people she and Dylan turned out to be in the end. It's an easy, simple and quick read, but I have to admit the first half of the book, my heart kept aching, and it was really painful because I really can feel Edie's heart breaking, so much as I can relate. I hated Dylan a lot with what he did, I was also irritated by some wrong choices and how naive Edie is at times. IN this second book, I loved how improved everything got. It was not all about their relationship, Edie's studies and academic pursuits and work in order to earn money showed off some responsibility ring. I loved loved how it turned out in the end. What with all the new friendships, deeper friendships with others. I love the maturity this book showed off. can't wait for the next!

Book Review: TheMephisto Covenant by Trinity Faegen

The Mephisto Covenant (The Mephisto Covenant, #1)The Mephisto Covenant by Trinity Faegen

My rating: 3 of 5 stars

Sasha is desperate to find out who murdered her father. When getting the answer means pledging her soul to Eryx, she unlocks a secret that puts her in grave danger—Sasha is Anabo, a daughter of Eve, and Eryx’s biggest threat.
A son of Hell, immortal, and bound to Earth forever, Jax looks for redemption in the Mephisto Covenant—God’s promise he will find peace in the love of an Anabo. After a thousand years, he’s finally found the girl he’s been searching for: Sasha.
With the threat of Eryx looming, Jax has to keep Sasha safe and win her over. But can he? Will Sasha love him and give up her mortal life?

My thoughts:
It was good, I liked the story however the way it twisted my beliefs disturbs me so much That's why I gave it a 3. By that I mean the Bible's story... And the being sons of hell is so freaky and too weird I couldn't really digest it. But, how love was depicted in thebookwasawesome and justifiable. Love was implied to be selfless, true, and in faith. Despite how twisted the story got at times, I love how confident the novel mentioned faith in God, Heaven and the reality of hell because people often ten to feel awkward arou d these things.

The story's plot in Itself is very original and creative, no kidding. I liked how fast paced everything was, the writing was good and moderately deep in the use of words and dictions and poetry or something that goes along with that line. Also, the idea of " mephisto covenant" was such a well thought. The book is long but the story held me prisoner because it really was good ( that came from me, despite my different religious beliefs with that of thestory)... Well, i can't say much really, except lastly for this: Sasha was a soft but fierce character while Jax has all that "Look at me, i'm strong and lean" look but inside him is a very innocent ( well ok only a bit) in loving, and he's such a guy too, haha, whatever that means!

P.S.( if this is even allowed, hehe): there is a next book right? :)

French Kiss (Diary of a Crush, #1)French Kiss by Sarra Manning

My rating: 3 of 5 stars

When Edie and Dylan first see each other in photography class, an instant attraction draws them together. But true love never does run smoothly—the two spar as much as they can’t keep their hands off each other. Then comes the college trip to Paris: Edie’s willpower will be tested to the limit! In between furious arguments and trips to the Louvre, the two share some passionate moments—but will it last?
I liked it OK. It was fun, quick and easy read. Like no deep thinking needed. The story’s about a girl named Edie who just transferred residence to a new town, and so she’s the new kid, and she has this huge crush on Dylan. We read on her diary, and as diary goes-it’s very self-centered, and she went on and on about her life, mostly her love life. It was like reading a friend’s diary, or talking to a friend about her love life. Though I have to say for a diary, it was too detailed (I can’t imagine writing on my diary that detailed). What I hated about the book was it’s shallowness; they were all so focused on their love life: kissing or snogging, breaking up, hooking up, exchanging partners, and fashion, aand no other problem involved. I mean, I loved all the chicklits I’ve read same as this book, but this is the FIRST time I’ve read something that is just focused on TWO people who always kiss each other, and it’s so obvious they like each other (and I really don’t get what Dylan’s problem is..anyway), and some conversations with some friends. BUT, I have to say I did enjoy reading it. Cute and nice.

My thoughts:
It would be believably rude of me to use shallow words to describe this formidable and zestful novel. So, I’m racking my brains out to use highly respectable and profound words....here we go.
WOW. Words of wonders welcomed me as I opened and read the first few pages of the book. It wasn’t really what you call “attractive words” of the first chapter that captivated me with the book, but by the STORY itself, the CONCEPT and the DEPTH of knowledge embedded with the conversations exchanged by the characters. I absolutely loved the fact that the novel made me feel intelligent and like I’m an omniscient literature reader (even if I’m not much of a deep reader, just a reader for entertainment’s sake), but that’s how I felt while reading (can’t blame me,haha). In consequence, I love Rachel Cohn and David Levithan for that. Into the story.
Lily and Dash and their cruel but gleeful and enthralling dares. Made my reading the book and buying it worth it. I liked how both characters have their own life story to tell, and they somehow coincide with each other in the Red Moleskine notebook. (I really really want to make an EPIC review about this book because after reading it, I feel EPIC because it’s EPIC. Gosh, what am I doing?) I feel festive, in the mood for lots of merry-making like it’s Christmas. The book made me feel like I was in New York, with them, also feeling the same cold they have (as I did last year when I was there). Making the setting of the story in Christmas time is just PERFecT! As a result, the main topic about LIFE in the book didn’t sound to far-fetched. There were lots of feelings and emotional baggage involved here, but not that those words made you feel depressed, but it kept me thinking. More like “I never thought other people could really think this, and there are still lovely families existing like Lily’s family, etc”. Anyway, soon those wishful thinkings, and talks of hopes and faith turned the “talking” (but more of “writing" in the notebook) into “doing”. I never EVER expected that they met in those circumstances. It was cute how Dash’s friends saw Lily personally first and how Lily’s family saw Dash 1st. As of feelings: I felt heartbroken sometimes, but mostly I was cheery and feeling all-fuzzy inside especially on HOW WELL it turned out in the end. There were lots of unexpected turn-out-of-events that were surely surprising but also endearing. I loved how this thing that happened between Dash and Lily turned out to be very positive, especially for Lily’s social life, haha, having earned girlfriends, not just acquaintances..
It’s not the Shakespearean kind of romance we all wish for, but it was still OTHER WORDLY and FANTASTIC, and more REALISTIC and that’s why I love it. A truly ENGAGING story. Dash & Lily- I think it’s fate that you met each other, but it’s going to be you who gets Choose what to do afterwards.:)

Author Interview & Giveaway: Junying Kirk- “The Same Moon"

Hi everyone! Today, on the blog I have Junying Kirk, author of “The Same Moon”. I just finished her book yesterday, and I learned a lot from it, so hopefully you’ll give it a chance. Junying is very generous and will giveaway an e-copy of her novel which you can download from Smashwords. Details of the giveaway right after the interview, enjoy!

The Same Moon by Junying Kirk (Amazon profile)
Kindle Edition (Amazon UK)
Published February 2nd 2011
my review here

Summary: (from goodreads)
Pearl Zhang was born in Sichuan Province in China, and grew up during the Cultural Revolution. She was raised in a typically Chinese manner, went to school, got a job, got married, and her whole life path was mapped out, or so it seemed.
Then she seized the opportunity to study in the United Kingdom – and stayed. How did she adjust to the Western way of life, and what did she have to do to overcome the barriers? Would she find happiness and fulfilment with her English suitor in Scotland, or would her heartache continue? She was in a new world, both foreign and exciting – under the Same Moon.
This book, the first of Junying Kirk’s “Journey to the West” Trilogy, will take you on a journey full of surprises and discoveries, from the East to the West, from the Middle Kingdom to the United Kingdom.

The interview:

Hi Junying! Welcome to Coffee books and me (my blog). Thanks for gracing us with your presence and sparing a bit of your time.
As every author have a story behind how they became a writer, may you share us your story?
Sure, that would be my pleasure :)!
So, when did you write your first book and how old were you?
I started writing from a young age, when I was still in China as a student. However, I started writing my first book in English after studying and living in the UK for some years. I started Part One Under Chinese Skies in 1998, but then I came to a cross-road in my life and had to put my unfinished manuscript away until a later date. So I was in my 30s when I wrote The Same Moon, although I did not publish it until February 2011.

For your book, “The Same Moon”, how did you come up with it?

I have harbored a desire to write for a very long time and I don’t remember exactly when that aspiration began but it has burning inside me for years, until one day that I was driven to sit down in front of my PC and started typing away. The idea had been growing within me, because I felt the urge to write about a personal journey from the East to the West, from the Middle Kingdom to the United Kingdom. So after I finished my PhD In Leeds, without a job to go to immediately, the baby of my first book was born.
How did you decide for the title?
The Same Moon came easily - in China there was once a belief that the moon in the West were bigger and brighter :) This misguided view was attacked viciously during the times when China was shut out from the rest of the world and had very limited understanding of what was really happening outside ‘The Great Wall’. In my book, I wanted to show life in both China and outside its borders in the wider world, highlighting cultural differences between the East and West, as well as demonstrating what lies as universal truth and shared characteristics, no matter where we come from. There are fundamental similarities between us human beings as well as differences and barriers to across. I hope that I have shed some light on this subject in my book.
Wow, that is interesting, never knew that until now.
I can’t help but think that you have similarities with Pearl Zhang, the main character of your novel, is my hunch right? If yes, was her story inspired by yours? If no, just ignore my question, haha.
You clever girl :)! A number of my readers have come to that conclusion that Pearl is me :). Yes, you’re right, there are many similarities between my fictional character Pearl to me, her creator. If you look at Pearl as a sculpture, then her model could very well be myself. Certainly all the incidents which were described in The Same Moon have happened in real life, either experienced by myself or people I knew. However,  note that I said that she was my creation, so I have taken the artistic liberty to make her more than just me, a character whom readers can believe in and relate to. Not just with Pearl, I have tried to develop my main characters to such an extent that I feel that they are completely real to me. They have lived inside me for many years and I now hope that they will live with my readers too.
Nice, nice! :)
So, how long does it take you to write a book? and for “The Same Moon”?
It depends. My second book Trials of Life only took me three months to finish my first draft, when I wrote day and night continuously, burning midnight oil, so to speak. But The Same Moon took longer, on and off, for several years. It probably took me more than a year in terms of solid block of writing time. So you can say that it’s a labour of love.
What is your work schedule like when you're writing? (do you write at home or office? do you eat while writing, etc)
I write at my home/office. I can write anywhere as long as I have a computer in front of me, but most of the writing is done at home in my study. As much as I love eating, I tend to forget about food when I am in the zone :) I do tend to listen to music as I write.

Are you open to writing in another genre? Like in the Young Adult and Paranormal Romance department where the demand is increasing day by day:)..
Interestingly, as you have indicated in your review of my first book, you can’t decide which genre The Same Moon falls under, and I share your frustration :). I experiment a lot in my writing and I am open to all kind of challenges. I certainly won’t rule out writing YA - I was surprised that I have acquired young readers like you, so YA is a real possibility. I don’t think I’ll ever write Paranormal though, as it is not a genre that I am attracted to or read about. I have a particular fascination with Crime Fiction, so I think that is something I may very well branch into. In fact, my current W.I.P. has strong elements of crime fiction in it.
I will be looking forward to it:)
What do you think makes a good story?
Stories that people can relate to and characters they can identify with. Stories that they can visualize it happening even though they may not have any experience of themselves. Personally I enjoy stories that inform and inspire, enchant and entertain in some ways, so ideally I want my books to do the same as the books I love reading so much.
Back to your book, do you mind sharing with us your favorite scene in the book?
“For the last time, I picked up the black plastic comb by her pillow and disentangled the knots that had formed overnight, heavy with wet sweat. I was not afraid, just too numb to feel anything. My eyes were dry, without tears. Death, like a ghost, had come without warning and just as quickly disappeared, taking my sister's soul. As I combed her hair and held her dead body against my own, thinking seemed to have evaded me. For the first time I found my sister beautiful, and then came a vague realisation that it was too late to undo all the injustice that I had done to her when she was alive.”
The scene after Pearl’s sister died is one of my favorite passages. I cried when I wrote these words and every time I came to this part, I could not help my eyes welling up.
Awww. It is indeed a sad scene..

Lastly, Any message to your readers and future readers?
Please read my books :) Seriously, I really hope that my books will reach a wider audience and those who read them will find them informative, interesting and inspiring.  I would love to hear more people say: oh yes, Junying Kirk’s books have taught me something that I didn’t know before, and I want to go on a journey of discovery with her.

Thanks again Junying, I’ve really learned a lot from you:)
