Book Review: Social Suicide by Gemma Halliday

Social Suicide (Deadly Cool, #2)Title: Social Suicide
Author: Gemma Halliday
Publisher: HarperTeen
Released On: April 24, 2012
Source: E-book copy
My rating:

Twittercide [twit-er-sahyd]: the killing of one human being by another while the victim is in the act of tweeting. Call me crazy, but I figured writing for the Herbert Hoover High Homepage would be a pretty sweet gig. Pad the resume for college applications, get a first look at the gossip column, spend some time ogling the paper’s brooding bad-boy editor, Chase Erikson. But on my first big story, things went... a little south. What should have been a normal interview with Sydney Sanders turned into me discovering the Homecoming Queen-hopeful dead in her pool. Electrocuted while Tweeting. Now, in addition to developing a reputation as HHH’s resident body finder, I’m stuck trying to prove that Sydney’s death wasn’t suicide. I’m starting to long for the days when my biggest worry was whether the cafeteria was serving pizza sticks or Tuesday Tacos...

 My Thoughts:

It was quite an entertaining read actually. I love the murder-spying thing going on. It reminds me of Meg Cabot's works. The story is quite simple but the thrill is still there. I haven't actually read the first book Deadly Cool, but I promise you won't get lost if you haven't read the first book before reading this. I have been meaning to read this book ever since I saw the cover and the title. (my friend keeps on teasing me about the “social suicide” pictures that I took of her..lol)

The characters are easily likable and relatable in some way. It was an easy-no pressure read. This is a series I surely will follow up from now on. Such a hilarious relaxing read! :)

Book Review: Pandora's Key by Nancy Richardson Fischer

Pandora's Key (The Key Trilogy, #1)Title: Pandora's Key
Author: Nancy Richardson Fischer
Publisher: self-published
Released On: November 18, 2011
Source: E-book from author :)
My rating:

When everything you believed about yourself is a lie, how do you unlock the truth… Evangeline Theopolis has nightmares about the violent deaths of women she has never met. Her single mother, Olivia, suffers delusions she can’t hide. And Malledy, a brilliant young man, may have a disease that will leave him paralyzed and insane. Their lives are about to collide. On Evangeline’s 16th birthday her mother gives her a necklace with an antique key charm—a family heirloom, though no one knows what the key unlocks. Everything changes. Her mom is hospitalized. Her godmother attempts murder. An ancient Order tries to kill Evangeline, and a lethal sect to kidnap her. Nothing makes sense—especially Evangeline’s own face, which has morphed from geeky to eerily stunning; the ancient key that feels strangely alive against her skin; and the magical abilities she begins to possess. Evangeline must use her wits and supernatural powers to fight her deadly adversaries and discover her true identity. But can she accept who she really is and save the world? My Thoughts: The main reason I agreed to read this book was because of the good reviews it got.not tomention that I like stories with Greek mythologies on it. Pandora's key had an original and unique plot. Narrating from different POV's was a nice approach to making it a 3rd POV. I dindnt exactly love loved the story but I kinda liked it, on a certain level.

My Thoughts:

I have to say it’s rare to find good reads from self-published books. But when the author, Nancy Fischer asked me to review her book, I checked out the reviews she referred me too and found out lots of good reviews, so I agreed to read it and I didn’t regret it one bit.:)

In the first place, I was curious to know how the author played the Greek Mythology in the book, and I love modern retellings of this Greek myths. This is also the first time I read of something from Pandora. The story building was good. The twists were thrilling and compelling. I continued reading on because of the story captivated me and I just had to know what will happen next. I made a lot of guesses for the mysteries, andI got some of them right but they were still pretty good and there were some pretty shocking revelations. The main character, Evangeline, had the most changed personality in the book, with only a span of a few days, she grew up. (who wouldn’t if faced with tough choices as she did?)

However, I also think the book needs further editing for typos and the strings and transitions of words, semtences and paragraphs were not that coherent. The pacing was fast but appropriate. There were some parts of the story that were too impossible to happen even if it’s in fiction, like it was impossibly fast that in the end, Evangeline easily swallowed her pride and believed everything they told her of, and sometimes there were too much things going on at the same time that it’s rather confusing.

Still, overall, I liked the novel. And I would like to find out what will happen next on the series :)

Excerpt! Excerpt! :)

I sat with my legs outstretched, leaning back on my palms and Chansey mimicked my position. She reached for her dress and scooted it up her thighs until she was satisfied with the amount of sun exposure on her legs. She enjoyed being in the sun and I wondered if she had given any thought as to how she would miss it if she became a vampire.
I didn’t want to think about it, so I shoved the thought aside and asked, “Are Gia and Lairah being overbearing about the wedding plans?”
“They have some intense ideas about our wedding,” she laughed. “I think I might want to elope.”
Now, she was talking my language. “You don’t have to convince me. I’ll take you to Vegas and make you my wife right now if it’s what you want.”
She quickly said, “Nope. I’m not ready to give up my dream of marrying you at the top of the open arm staircases.”
I wondered how I could be so lucky. How had I found enough favor with the gods to be given such a beautiful gift as Chansey?
“Oh, I’m sorry,” she apologized. “I didn’t even ask you if that was what you wanted.”
“I’ve already told you that I thought it was perfect,” I reminded her.
She appeared puzzled. “I don’t recall you telling me that.”
“We didn’t exactly discuss it. When we were at Rachel and Christian’s wedding reception, you told me how you pictured your wedding. We didn’t get far into the conversation because that jackass, Evan Finley, interrupted us.”
“Yes, that I remember well. I’m sorry his stupid insults stand out more in my mind than our conversation,” she apologized.
Just thinking about that jackass had my blood boiling, so I thought it was a great idea to steer the direction of the conversation back toward the wedding. “Have you thought about a date for our wedding?”
She smiled and her eyes lit up. “Yes, I’ve given it a lot of thought and I have a date in mind. How do you feel about a November wedding?”
No way! That was too long to wait. “I’d be fine with it if this was the end of October. I know four months isn’t forever, but it sure feels an eternity to me right now.”
“It’s not an eternity and four months barely gives me enough time to plan a small wedding. We haven't even told Granna and Granddaddy about our engagement yet. Have you forgotten that?”
I definitely had not forgotten that detail. “No, it hasn’t slipped my mind.”
She laughed and asked, “Are you worried about telling them?”
“I am a little nervous about it. I’ve never asked to marry someone before,” I admitted.
She leaned over and bumped her shoulder against mine. “Well, that’s good to know, but we’re telling them we’re getting married, not asking permission.”
“I know we don’t have to have their permission. That’s not what I need. It’s their blessing I want. I may be three times as old as Grady, but I still want to be respectful,” I said.
She looked at me and rested her chin against her shoulder as she laughed. “That is so bizarre to me.”
It didn’t sound like a compliment. “Does my age bother you?”
“No, I don’t think of you as your actual age. You just seem like a 26 year-old to me.” She sat up and leaned closer to brush her lips across mine. “A very robust 26 year-old.”
Her kiss and proximity stirred her Agape scent, leaving me with an intense urgency to be closer to her. I reached for her, pulling her against my chest a little too quickly. I heard her gasp and then I saw the smile across her face, proving the sudden catch in her breath resulted from delight instead of fear.
She deepened our kiss as she rolled to her back, pulling me on top of her to rest between her bent knees. This was our first private moment since we arrived at the compound and it caused me to be overly enthusiastic. I knew I shouldn’t, but I placed my hand behind one of her knees and pulled her leg to wrap around my waist as I pressed my body into hers. A sigh escaped her lips and she pulled her other leg up around my waist. The thoughts of what I wanted to do to her returned me to my senses and she recognized the look she had become so well acquainted with when things between us had gone a little too far.
She groaned because she knew what was coming next and locked her legs around my waist. “Don’t you dare stop because you can not keep doing this to me. It’s totally unfair!”
I reached for her legs to coax them off of me. “Move the wedding up and I’ll be more than glad to become totally fair. In fact, I’m quite anxious to be totally fair.”
A thoughtful look came across her face and she said, “October. It’s the earliest I can pull it off even with help from Gia and Lairah.”
I tugged on her bottom lip with my teeth. “That’s still three months away,” I complained.
A pouty look came over her face and the little vixen I loved tried to use her power of persuasion on me just like Sebastian said she would. “I know a way to make the next three months pass much faster.”
“You’re name shouldn’t be Chansey. It should be Risky because you are playing with a fire you highly underestimate,” I assured her.
She dramatically huffed. “Promises, promises. I’m not sure I’ll ever find out if I underestimate you or not.”
Since I easily talked her into moving the date a month earlier, I thought I might push my luck a little further. “Looks like you won’t discover the truth for months, unless you want to move the date closer.” I took my hand and placed it on her thigh, moving it slowly under her dress as I said, “Come on, let’s do it.” I allowed my words linger as I gazed into her eyes and then I added, “In August.”
When I began to laugh, she forcibly slapped my hand away from under her dress to show her unhappiness with my joke. “I can wait if you can. Maybe even until the end of December. I’ve heard Christmas weddings are beautiful.”
It was clear I had pushed my luck too far with her when she showed me how she could beat me at my own game, so I conceded. “I’ll take the October wedding.”

What I think:

Well, I personally am curious about this series since I haven’t read the first one. The cover is actually pretty, and I think judging from the cover, it deserves to be printed on paperback! The expression of the girl’s face says a lot about what could she be thinking? And how it applies to the story...I’m not a fan of the upper bodice of the gown though. But the physical features of the girl are so gorgeous that she brings up the outfit. I could only hope to say that the book’s story says the same with the cover.
 What do you think? :)

Waiting on Wednesday (5): Unwholly by Neal Shusterman

Waiting on Wednesday is a weekly meme by Jill from Breaking the Spine, featuring books that we are excited upon.

This week, I can’t wait on...

The cover was just recently released, anddd the summary is not yet available. But here is the Unwind, the first book of the series, summary.

Connor, Risa, and Lev are running for their lives.

The Second Civil War was fought over reproductive rights. The chilling resolution: Life is inviolable from the moment of conception until age thirteen. Between the ages of thirteen and eighteen, however, parents can have their child "unwound," whereby all of the child's organs are transplanted into different donors, so life doesn't technically end. Connor is too difficult for his parents to control. Risa, a ward of the state is not enough to be kept alive. And Lev is a tithe, a child conceived and raised to be unwound. Together, they may have a chance to escape and to survive.

I’m so excited for the sequel of this series because I want to know what happens to this gruesome dystopian thriller. haha. WEee! :)

Thoughts on Tuesdays (3): Dystopian Love

This is a weekly meme here on my blog featuring stuffs basically anything under the sun :)

Dystopian Love

Now, I really don’t know when the dystopian YA genre started, or became popular. But for me, the first dystopian novel I’ve read was Matched by Allie Condie last January 2011. Even if the Hunger Games was published way before it. Matched was published last 2010 and the Hunger Games was published last 2008. Anyway, my point is I don’t know when it really started, but I’m pretty sure before this dystopian YA craze began, the dystopian movies arrived first, but just not the YA type.

When I read Matched, I liked it. The thought of having a future broken world trying to survive by building a strict society overwhelmed me. But when I read the Hunger Games, I was officially addicted to the genre. And when I’m overly addicted to something, I tend to share it to my friends. Like the time I started reading a lot of novels again, I lend my books to my close friends. Then when this genre caught my eye, I shared it to them too. Later on when they finished reading the books I shared, they said “why do you keep on letting us read depressing books?”. And we laughed at that because it was true. But I still don’t know the answer to that “Why?”.

I don’t know what it is with this depressing genre that enraptured the teens nowadays. It can be the exciting adventure of survival, or the idea of rebelling against a system that is naturally wrong, or the dark story lines that is the opposite of the popular epic paranormal loves we found in Twilight and such? When you stop and think about it, there are a lot of reasons why.

Personally, as a young adult and a reader myself, I love dystopian novels because of the adrenaline rush I feel of the adventure of the story. Not to mention how each author create a new type of environment where their characters live. I believe each and every novel series or stand alones are unique to itself. Also, it has always been my dream to experience an adventure in my life. Like literally the adventure that requires me to walk the woods, hunt food, fire woods, and most of all how to fight & defend myself. I want to especially learn how to be an archer. It maybe impossible for it to me to happen in reality, so I dissolve myself into reading these novels.

And so whatever the reason you love dystopian novels, what’s important is we appreciate this new genre, and I think we can pick a lesson or two in every book we read. Well, I do. I now have learned how to value our environment more, leading me to change one step at a time. I hope we all do too. :)

Book Review: The Edumacation of Jay Baker by Jay Clark

The Edumacation of Jay BakerTitle: The Edumacation of Jay Baker
Author: Jay Clark
PublisherHenry Holt and Co.
Release Date: January 31, 2012
Read from May 20-21, 2012
My rating:

A few "sexy" bullet points about Jay:
- He is in love with a cheerleader named Cameo "Appearance" Parnell
- He is forever losing "Love-15" to tennis-playing goddess Caroline Richardson
- He rocks a touche array of pop-culture references, jokes, and puns
- His family-life cookie is about to crumble.

Live vicariously through Jay as he faces off against his mortal enemy, gets awkward around his dream girl(s), loses his marbles in a Bermudian love triangle, watches his parents' relationship implode, and, finally, learns to get real and be himself(ish).

My Thoughts:

If you’re looking for a fun, quirky, quick read, narrated by a sarcastic teenage boy, then this book is for you.

Jay Baker, is just an ordinary 15-year old freshman, with a very sarcastic and smart humor that will make you laugh, cry, and all things in the middle. The story is actually simple, but the way he narrates and reacts to the situation is hilarious and interesting. His parents are divorcing, he’s confused with his love life. It’s actually understandable, he is young and still lacks the maturity older people have because of the many experiences they have in life. He is in the crossroad in his life, and reading about it is not only entertaining but it also brought light and some wisdom to me. I just love the book!

Book Review: Body&Soul by Stacey Kade

Body and Soul (The Ghost and the Goth, #3)Title: Body and Soul
Author: Stacey Kade
Series: The Ghost and the Goth
Publisher: Hyperion
Release Date: May 1, 2012
Read from May 18-19, 2012
My rating:

The final book in The Ghost and the Goth Trilogy!

The Ghost
I’ve been trapped in the body of Lily “Ally” Turner for a month now. Talk about a fashion crisis on an epic scale. What worries me more, though, is sometimes I catch Will looking at me like he thinks I’m Lily...or that he wishes I were. Without the good looks of my former self, I don’t know who I am, or if who that is is good enough. I need out of this mess. Now.

Will and I have been looking for a solution, one that would separate me from Lily without killing her. But it’s not going well. Then, when it seems like things couldn’t get any worse, we run into Misty, my former best friend and boyfriend-stealer extraordinaire, who claims she’s being haunted...by me. Seriously?

I’m determined to get to the bottom of who’s pretending to be the spirit of Alona Dare (while I’m pretending to be someone else) and then get the heck out of this body. Or die trying...

The Goth
I’ll admit it. It’s really weird to look at Alona but see Lily. I do know the difference, though, contrary to what Alona might be saying. And Alona is more than a pretty face to me, not that she would believe that.

Our one lead for some help in this messed up situation might be a page torn from the yellow pages-—the “Psychics” section-—I found in my dad’s stuff. One of the “fakes” seems a bit more real-—and odd-—than the others. Before I can investigate further, though, Alona is off and chasing a ghost that’s probably nothing more than a figment of Misty’s guilty imagination. Now Lily’s family is freaking out because she didn’t come home, my mom is ordering me to stay out of it, and something is definitely wrong with the person formerly known as Lily “Ally” Turner..

My Thoughts:

It wasn't much of an epic ending for the series, but it was good enough...i think. A couple of things I didn't like were the light ending and not much of a closure. I admit I wasn't super contented. But, the whole novel wasn't all bad.
I love Alona's character, especially the changes in her. It just makes sense that she was given a second chance. Considering she's more of the "think before act" kind of girl now. Plus, she gives life much more meaning now. Will was changed too, and he learned to live life with a purpose. And instead of ignoring the gift he has, he found how to control and help others with it. The wisdom you get from all that experience is helpful but overwhelming too.
The story was simple, but the climax still made me hold my breath, and made me wish there wasn't any problem in the first place. One thing that held back for me to fully liking it was te ending, as I have mentioned earlier. It would have been nicer if the decision for what Alona has become in the end was concrete. However, Kade's choice of not putting a certain someone albeit, made Alona assume things was kind of putting it in the neutral situation.

Overall though it was still a good read, amd I'll certainly miss Alona Dare. :)

Book Review: Insurgent by Veronica Roth

Insurgent (Divergent, #2)Title: Insurgent
Author: Veronica Roth
Series: Divergent trilogy
Publisher: HarperTeen
Release Date: May 1, 2012
websites: http://veronicarothbooks.blogspot.com/
My rating:
Read from May 16-18, 2012

One choice can transform you—or it can destroy you. But every choice has consequences, and as unrest surges in the factions all around her, Tris Prior must continue trying to save those she loves—and herself—while grappling with haunting questions of grief and forgiveness, identity and loyalty, politics and love.

Tris's initiation day should have been marked by celebration and victory with her chosen faction; instead, the day ended with unspeakable horrors. War now looms as conflict between the factions and their ideologies grows. And in times of war, sides must be chosen, secrets will emerge, and choices will become even more irrevocable—and even more powerful. Transformed by her own decisions but also by haunting grief and guilt, radical new discoveries, and shifting relationships, Tris must fully embrace her Divergence, even if she does not know what she may lose by doing so.

My Thoughts:

I refused to read the 5star rating-reviews of the readers who have read Insurgent before me, because Of three things. One, I might expect a lot from the book and might be disappointed in the end. Two, i might get biased with my review after reading it. And lastly, I really don't mind spoilers, except for the book series tha I love. That goes to prove that I'm writing this review from a clean slate.

Talking about clean slates, I have to admit I struggled a bit with reading the book because I didn't reread Divergent. Apart from Tris and Four, I basically forgot everyone's names. Thankfully I still remembered the plot.

Onto the book. I was surprised to everything that happened but I still loved it. I love the character developments that evolved especially Tris' part. She was a rumble of mixed emotions, and I don't blame her. Part of me loving dystopian books is I like reading about the character's emotions and knowing it from their perspectives. In this case, Tris has been through a lot, and the traumas she experienced-from her mom and Will dying- no wonder she has trouble with holding guns. And that was just a piece of what she's been through. If I admired her in Divergemt, I admired her more in Insurgent. She demonstrated great strength from enduring what she endured, honesty for not hiding her emotions and expressing them and not being ashamed to show it, and intelligence in how she analyzed things especially her clearheadedness as they happen while there's fight. All those traits might make her admirable but there are also some stuffs I hated about her-her low regard of her life at one phase in the book. This is where my love for Four's character looms up again. He is known as being so tough and all that, but when it comes to Tris, he became not only that stronghold for her, but he proudly and publicly shows his love for her. The vulnerability he showed didn't show weakness, it was adorable.

The book was thrilling and unstoppable. These are the kind of books that I don't regret buying because they weigh something. A great story that affects me not just emotionally but it also makes me think. In Insurgent, my long lost question was answered, why Chicago?nwahat happened to the rest of the world?..

If Divergent caught you, Insurgent will surely take you by the storm. While Divergent focused on building the story's foundation, Insurgent showed that being an insurgent is not all bad, because as Johanna said "sometimes the people you oppress become mightier than you would like".

The key to saving the world hangs from her neck...

"With this fresh, intriguing novel, Fischer is clearly laying the groundwork for a trilogy that will successfully continue to bring ancient mythology forward into a modern tale of self discovery... Fischer's fast pacing and numerous plot twists are sure to keep the reader turning the pages... Characters are well fleshed-out and sympathetic, and some have hidden alliances that serve to make Evangeline's plight seem all the more realistic. With vivid imagery, compelling characters and plenty of bursts of action, this first novel weaving mythology and contemporary teenage troubles is thrillingly memorable!"
   —Kirkus Indie
"In this inventive debut installment of The Key Trilogy, an Oregon girl's life is uprooted by the discovery of her pivotal role in a prophecy stemming from Greek mythology... Surprising twists add to the story's intrigue. The co-author of several sports autobiographies, Fischer hits her stride in this quick-paced novel."

As for me, the author kindly provided me with a copy, and so I will read it this week, and watch out for my review! :)

Book Review: The City of Lost Souls by Cassandra Clare

City of Lost Souls (The Mortal Instruments, #5)Title: City of Lost Souls
Author: Cassandra Clare
Publisher: Margaret K. McElderry
Released: May 8, 2012
Read from May 10-13, 2012
My rating:

The demon Lilith has been destroyed and Jace has been freed from her captivity. But when the Shadowhunters arrive to rescue him, they find only blood and broken glass. Not only is the boy Clary loves missing–but so is the boy she hates, Sebastian, the son of her father Valentine: a son determined to succeed where their father failed, and bring the Shadowhunters to their knees.

No magic the Clave can summon can locate either boy, but Jace cannot stay away—not from Clary. When they meet again Clary discovers the horror Lilith’s dying magic has wrought—Jace is no longer the boy she loved. He and Sebastian are now bound to each other, and Jace has become what he most feared: a true servant of Valentine’s evil. The Clave is determined to destroy Sebastian, but there is no way to harm one boy without destroying the other. Will the Shadowhunters hesitate to kill one of their own?

Only a small band of Clary and Jace’s friends and family believe that Jace can still be saved — and that the fate of the Shadowhunters’ future may hinge on that salvation. They must defy the Clave and strike out on their own. Alec, Magnus, Simon and Isabelle must work together to save Jace: bargaining with the sinister Faerie Queen, contemplating deals with demons, and turning at last to the Iron Sisters, the reclusive and merciless weapons makers for the Shadowhunters, who tell them that no weapon on this earth can sever the bond between Sebastian and Jace. Their only chance of cutting Jace free is to challenge Heaven and Hell — a risk that could claim any, or all, of their lives.

And they must do it without Clary. For Clary has gone into the heart of darkness, to play a dangerous game utterly alone. The price of losing the game is not just her own life, but Jace’s soul. She’s willing to do anything for Jace, but can she even still trust him? Or is he truly lost? What price is too high to pay, even for love?

Darkness threatens to claim the Shadowhunters in the harrowing fifth book of the Mortal Instruments series.

My Thoughts:

Wow. just WOW. It was like watching a marathon series of TVD, except it’s TMI, and it’s plot is far more different than TVD. I never thought, or actually I thought of it but anyway, I never thought COLS could beat or maintain the level of epicness of the other 4 books, but it actually did! I didn’t know what can still possibly happen in the 5th book because every little possible thing happened already. City of Lost Souls was a book full of lost souls. LOl.

The ending of City of Fallen Angels left us all hanging with lots of questions, the biggest of them is “what will happen to Jace now?”. I remember feeling so sad of how Jace’s character was given a very heavy problem in the last book, and just as he was relieved from Lilith’s control, he was yet again loaded with a heavier problem. (though I know there will be a solution,he can’t just die). Anyway, so in the beginning of City of Lost Souls, we follow two weeks after the incident on the rooftop. The Clave is hunting for Jace & Sebastian, but after 2 weeks of failed attempts at finding them, they moved them second in their prioritized tasks. So, as usual, the gang (Clary, Alec, Izzy, Magnus & Simon) made their initiative and took it in their own hands to solve this problems. Clary ended up acting as a “spy” and stayed with Jace & Sebastian, while Alec, Magnus, Izzy and Simon were figuring out and finding ways how to kill Sebastian without harming Jace.

What I liked about this book is the no holds barred action and romance scenes. Clary can be officially deemed as a one hell of a kick-ass woman. She’s not becoming a shadowhunter, because she already is embodying a Shadowhunter. Her boldness and braveness is not something to be looked down on here, but admired. There were a lot of unexpected twists that made me hold my breath countless of times. Thankfully, not so much deaths that I care about. Simon, oh gosh, I love Simon more than ever! I appreciated his funny attitude before, but now I adore it! He’s like a happy-go-lucky guy who acts like it’s nothing to him, but deep inside he cares and he cares a lot. I appreciate more of his and Clary’s friendship here. I dunno why. Maybe I just don’t remember how they were before. What surprised me even more was the fact that on the two times I cried in this book, it was always on the scenes with Simon on it. (seriously, I’m becoming attached to this guy and I don’t mind it a bit). Let’s move on to Jace. My gosh, for some reason I imagine him more handsome and hotter now, and at the end of it all, I saw how much wisdom he has gained from all his experiences. I just loved him more and more.

The plot was not complicated to follow, and was very much well planned. There’s no other way to say it other than to just simply say reading this book was an amazing journey! I was totally entertained and enthralled with the story. Captivated, I was, with how things went through in the book. And I will just say this once, I have fallen somewhat to Sebastian. Haha. There’s just something about evil guys that enraptures me. I pity their situation and understand that they are lonely. And Sebastian is really alone. He just has this evilness in his nature that lead him to what he is now.

Thank God the ending was not a cliff hanger. And the ending was superb. The book is absolutely ah-may-zing. Can’t wait for Heavenly Fire. And I can’t wait for the movie! Seriously, that movie is long overdue! Hunger Games was already shown two months ago, and TMI was the first one to be adapted.

Book Review: The Selection by Kiera Cass

The Selection (The Selection, #1)Title: The Selection
Author: Kiera Cass
Publisher: HarperTeen
Released On: April 24, 2012
Read from: May 7-8, 2012
My rating:

For thirty-five girls, the Selection is the chance of a lifetime. The opportunity to escape the life laid out for them since birth. To be swept up in a world of glittering gowns and priceless jewels. To live in the palace and compete for the heart of the gorgeous Prince Maxon.

But for America Singer, being Selected is a nightmare. It means turning her back on her secret love with Aspen, who is a caste below her. Leaving her home to enter a fierce competition for a crown she doesn't want. Living in a palace that is constantly threatened by violent rebel attacks.

Then America meets Prince Maxon. Gradually, she starts to question all the plans she's made for herself- and realizes that the life she's always dreamed of may not compare to a future she never imagined.

My Thoughts:

I really don't know why I like these Bachelor types of contests in novels. I don't approve of the show- especially the dating lots of girls/guys at the same time, and all those charades. But in "The Selection" there's a deeper reason why this kind of choosing must happen. As you've read in the summary, thie setting of the story happens after world war 3 and how the US was captured by China and how it finally gained back liberty and renamed itself as Illea, and became a monarchy political society. It's quite a bold thing to do actually for Kiera Cass to have some info applied to her book. Since China is a booming country now, and you might not know that these kind of ings entered the mind of their leaders..maybe even throug this book. Not impossible!

Anyway, from thwe very start it was so obvious that America Singer, the one narrating the story, secures an important character in the book, since she's the one narrating, duh! I kinda like her though, and how Cass made it to be that she's not a first timer in love. By the time Maxon the Prince came inside the picture, I was pining for both of them to end upnwith each other, because isn't this what this is all about? I turned out to be so wrong because there's so many things hidden beneath the words of the author and the concept of "the Selection".

For me personally, it's somehow related to the current economic status of every country in the world, and these kinds of wRs and mutinies are really not far from happening. Another thing is hpw we take for granted our freedom. This is made rwalize on us when the caste system is enforced in the book. Romantically, I quite concluded that I still despise girls confused with their feelings, like Calla of the Nightshade series. I sure hope America will choose soon and figure it out before I'll hate her. Lol.

The ending was fittingn but so much cliff hanging. There was so much stuff that were still on the gray areas and are still unfinisged. But for a first book in the trilogy, this made quite a mark on me enough that I am eager for the next book.
